Seneca Fall Festival KIDS FISHING CONTEST:

Submitted by Robbie Jimerson

While the fishing derby is for the kids, I encourage anyone interested in fly fishing to attend the fly casting demo/clinic.  Alberto is a good friend of mine and one of the best casters I’ve ever seen – he can bomb line!  He also helps run a learn to fly fish program every Tuesday night at SUNY Fredonia.  It’s a fun time where fly anglers of all skill levels can get together and tie flies or practice casting.  Alberto is an experienced teacher and great when it comes to working with kids.  He also guides for steelhead on all the local creeks, so he knows where the fish are and what’s working.

The Cattaraugus Creek is one of the best steelhead rivers in the Northeast and the best part of that Creek is on the Cattaraugus Reservation.  The casting and techniques that will be presented can be applied to not only pond fishing but also to fishing for steelhead in the big creek.

Lastly – we encourage parents to fish with their kids but not catch fish for their kids.  Some of last year’s prizes went to fish caught by adults and the kids that caught their own fish didn’t end up winning.
