Ja:göh Dr. Naomi Lee

Featured in AEOP Apprenticeships and Fellowships Summer Speaker Series

The AEOP (Army Educational Outreach Program) held a summer speakers series for AEOP apprentices and fellows to learn more about STEM research, opportunities and more from professionals in the field and those who have gone through their programming.

This past July, Dr. Naomi Lee and students from Northern Arizona University talked about navigating a career in academia.

Dr. Lee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at NAU. Having lived on the Seneca Cattaraugus Reservation nearly her entire childhood left her with a passion to promote the Haudenosaunee Seventh Generation philosophy that states, “In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”

Dr. Lee said, “I had no overlap with professionals in advanced careers, particularly those in the STEM and health-related fields. … The lack of Native American role models continues to be a barrier for Native American students to persist in STEM. I continue to strive to change this story for the next generation of Native American and other historically excluded students through incorporating the teachings of my Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) ancestors into my science and mentorship.”
