Training & Employment Resource Center!
Another spectacular successful summer program ran from July 10th – Aug. 17th this year! A total of 19 youth were placed in the Allegany offices with almost 20 Seneca Nation Departments and Salamanca businesses requesting youth! It is sad to say, some of the departments were not able to have a youth for the summer, but we will definitely reach out to you and look forward to next summer!
Taking on a youth age 14 – 18 is a big commitment as a director, a department, and the staff in each department. So, we would like to give recognition to those departments who did request a youth and who was able to have a youth with them, with some of them taking more than one – up to 4 – and some of them, repetitive worksites! We truly do appreciate your collaborative efforts to help our program work and more importantly, to give these young people a chance at a work opportunity!

Silent Auction Fund-Raiser Donators and Winners!

Allegany & Cattaraugus Field Trip!
With the fund-raising monies, the Allegany and Cattaraugus groups combined a field trip to Holiday Valley Sky High Adventure Park where they got to complete in-the-tree obstacle courses – levels easy, medium, and difficult; rock climbing; mountain coaster rides; and had ice cream treats, Chiavetta’s pulled pork sandwiches and fixings, and fruit snacks! It was a really fun time!
Certifications & Workshops
Over the course of the six weeks, the youth were not only learning the skills of the occupation they chose, but they attended weekly workshops to learn a variety of skills.
Their first day, they all attended the New Hire Orientation with Human Resources/TERC YES Orientation. Here they learned policies and procedures of the Seneca Nation, department worksite location, youth employee expectations, etc.
They also received certification in Workplace Safety through a curriculum called Youth @ Work – Young People Work Safety created by the Dept. of Labor, Center for Disease Control, and OSHA.
Third, the youth each received certification in First Aid/CPR.
They also received certificates in Career Readiness Workshops (CRWs) in areas such as Positive Work Attitudes, Effective Work Habits, Handling Constructive Criticism, Working With Difficult People, Chain of Command, Time Management.
Lastly, the youth learned Financial Literacy – budgeting money, opening a checking account, difference between a credit card and debit card, difference between a payroll check and a personal check, how to ‘write a check’ and how to ‘balance your checkbook’.
Cultural programming included a Haudenosaunee Youth Empowerment workshop provided by Donald ‘Flip’ White and a Traditional Medicine Plant Walk provided by Yolanda Smith.
All in all, thank everyone for making this a successful, fun summer program! Can’t wait until next year!
