Seneca Gaming’s Inaugural Indigenous Fashion Show

The celebration of Native heritage takes center stage as Indigenous designers and models from across North America hit our runway, showcasing the rich tapestry of Indigenous fashion.

On November 10th, 2023, the Seneca Gaming Corporation held its Inaugrual Indigenous Fashion Show at the Seneca Niagara Casino Mezzanine hosted by Saulteaux Anishinaabe actor Adam Beach.

“I want to extend a big thanks to everyone who played a vital role in bringing Seneca Gaming’s first Indigenous Fashion Show to life. This has been a collaborative effort over the past months, and I couldn’t be more appreciative of the support and resources that made it all possible.

This event wasn’t just about fashion; it was about the representation of our Indigenous people. It’s a means of expression and a way to showcase the beauty of our traditions in a modern world. I am proud to say that this event was 100% Indigenous. From the DJ, designers, models, host, makeup/hair, right down to the vendors.

By coming together to celebrate Indigenous fashion, we’re breaking down stereotypes, fostering understanding, and highlighting the significance of our heritage. Thank you to everyone for being part of this!” ~ Elexa P., Marketing & Communication Professional, Seneca Resorts & Casinos

Seneca Designers

Mary Jacobs, Cattaraugus Territory
Mary Jacobs, a Seneca Nation member from Cattaraugus Territory, Irving, New York, is a skilled beadwork artist inspired by her environment and cultural heritage. She specializes in traditional Iroquois Raised Beadwork, incorporating intricate patterns using materials like artisan glass, semi-precious stones, textiles, and leather. Her pieces are not just decorative but also carry stories and symbolism. One of her favorite creations is the pin cushion beaded bird, a revival of a historical craft from the Niagara Falls region. Mary adds a modern twist with vibrant colors and high-quality materials. Her dedication to preserving cultural traditions is evident in her involvement in exhibitions like the Santa Fe Art Market 2022, First Nations Arts 2022, New York State Fair Indian Village 2022, and the Seneca Nation Fall Festival 2022, where her talent and commitment shine.

Samantha Jacobs, Cattaraugus Territory
Samantha Jacobs, a full-time teaching artist from the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory, is a versatile practitioner of various arts, including beadwork, tufting, traditional clothing, and jewelry, drawing inspiration from her cultural heritage and the natural world. Initially learning from her mother and being a part of the Buffalo Creek Dancers as a child, Samantha has continued her artistic journey as an adult by mastering new forms. She collaborates with her mother at the Stanley Huff Heritage Center, where they host the Catt Rez Beaders, a group that meets weekly for beadwork and crafting. Samantha’s commitment extends beyond personal expression; she believes in the importance of passing on her knowledge, encouraging her students to teach others, ensuring the preservation and thriving of these cultural traditions in her community.

Alyssa Schmidt, Cattaraugus Territory
Alyssa Schmidt, a proud member of the Seneca Nation, honed their skills in traditional raised style beadwork under the guidance of their self-taught uncle and father. Encouraged by these mentors, Alyssa’s passion expanded to explore flat style beadwork and sewing. Actively engaged in the pow-wow dance circle since the age of 2, they have maintained a steadfast commitment to this tradition. Joining the Buffalo Iroquois Dancers, led by the late Beverly Porter, marked a significant chapter in Alyssa’s journey, involving travels across the United States and Canada to showcase Traditional Iroquois Dances and pow-wow performances. Since delving into beadwork in 2005, Alyssa has consistently contributed to art contests, earning numerous prizes and honorable mentions. Expanding their artistic repertoire into homemaking categories, particularly sewing, Alyssa has achieved success with placements ranging from third to first place.
