Seneca Dictionary App Now Available on the App Store & Google Play

The Allegany Language Department is proud to announce that the Seneca Dictionary App is now available on the App Store & Google Play! It contains over 16,000+ audible Seneca words!

The Seneca Dictionary App has many useful features, including a favorites tab, search by text/voice, A-Z tab for finding words quickly, and a downloadable pdf of the dictionary itself.

We hope that this app will prove to be a useful tool in language acquisition within our communities. This is the second app that the Allegany Language Department has released. The first app, entitled “Seneca”, is a language topic reference guide, and was released on the App Store and Google Play in May 2021. Both apps were created by Allegany Language Department and with the help of Thornton Media, Inc. (a native-owned language software company based in Las Vegas, Nevada).

We would like to thank Sandra Jimerson-Dowdy for all her hard work recording the dictionary in its entirety (it was about a 2-year recording process). We would also like to thank the audio engineers that worked on this project over the years (Jordan Ball, Mike Jones, & Jimmy Crane). We would finally like to thank the source text for our app, its compiler, and all the Seneca speakers that contributed to it:

English-Seneca Dictionary, compiled by Wallace Chafe with the indispensable collaboration of Alberta Austin, Phyllis Bardeau, Marie Biscup, Leroy Button, Betsy Carpenter, Bill Crouse, Edward Curry, Lehman Dowdy, Sandy Dowdy, Elsie Jacobs, Avery Jimerson, Fidelia Jimerson, Roy Jimerson, Albert Jones, Solon Jones, Doris Kenyon, Miriam Lee, Clayton Logan, Oscar Nephew, Myrtle Peterson, Warren Skye, Lena Snow, Tessie Snow, Raymond Sundown, Corbett Sundown, and Pearl White

We are very excited about this new dictionary app, and hope that you will be as well!

We hope you find it helpful on your language journey!

The Allegany Language Department will continue to update and makeimprovements to this app.

This project was made possible with funds received from the Administration for Native Americans: American Rescue Plan and the Seneca Nation.
