Cattaraugus and Allegany Library Branches Celebrates 45 Years of Service!
The Seneca Nation Library celebrated the 45th anniversary of its Cattaraugus and Allegany Branches on July 9, 2024. This event marks nearly half a century of service to the community, providing access to educational resources and various community programs. The Seneca Nation Library branches offer a wide range of services, including access to books, digital resources, and community events aimed at promoting and preserving the Seneca Nation’s history and cultural heritage.
The Cattaraugus Library opened its doors on July 9, 1979. Later that year in the fall the Allegany Library was completed. Both have had multiple additions including children’s wings. Krista Jacobs, Allegany Branch Director, says when she first started as library assistant, a busy month was 125-150 visitors. It’s now averaging 700 visitors a month. One month having 1,500 visitors. She’s proud that the libraries continue to impact and be a resource for Seneca people along with community members and visitors.
Throughout the years, some events that occurred at both branches include:
Annual Art Shows, Summer Reading Programs, Annual Book Sales, Culture and Craft Classes, i.e. language, beading, pottery, ribbon shirt and traditional clothing, woodburning, painting. Offering programs with Seneca Nation departments and school districts. As well as Elder Outreach Programs, speakers’ series including authors, story hours, movie nights, seasonal parties and contests.
The anniversary celebrations included live performances, food and activities to honor the library’s dedication and contributions to the Seneca Nation and community.
