The 2024 USDA Tribal Agriculture and Food Policy Internship is coordinated by the Office of Tribal Relations Tribal Colleges and Universities Program and is a collaboration with the Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program.
Name: Yanenowi Logan
Tribal Affiliation: Seneca Nation of Indians
Education: Cornell University- BS Environment & Sustainability
Intern at: USDA Office of Tribal Relations
What am I working on? My project this summer is to develop an introductory guide to Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge for farmers and ranchers to implement best practices into their crop and garden systems across the United States. My report will be regional; looking at companion planting for the East, dry farming techniques for the southwest, controlled burning for the west coast, etc.
Biggest takeaway: Practicing Indigenous Knowledge requires community care. From developing the report and working with an intern cohort of young tribal advocates, I know the need for healthy relationships with land relatives whether you’re in the government, university, or in your homelands.
Fun Fact: I play lacrosse which originally comes from the medicine game of Haudenosaunee communities. The game has taken me to Italy, Prague, and now to Hawaii this fall!
Favorite Indigenous Food: Bug bread! (made with wild black raspberries, not actual bugs)
Advice for Future Interns: Blending into the federal government as a young tribal advocate may not be easy. That’s okay! Stand out and share your perspective because it is much needed in these spaces.
