From Senator George Borrello

New York State Native American Day

May 12th was Native American Day in the State Senate. It was an honor to welcome members of Native American tribes from across New York, including my friends and neighbors from the Seneca Nation.

The day featured a thoughtful roundtable discussion on the issues facing Native communities, as well as powerful cultural demonstrations that celebrated the rich heritage and traditions of New York’s Indigenous nations. It was also a meaningful opportunity to listen, learn, and strengthen the relationships between state leaders and Native nations.

Thank you to Senator Joe Addabbo, Chair of the State-Native American Relations Committee, for his leadership in organizing this important day of recognition, dialogue, and respect.

“As legislators we often call to look forward to create policies for tomorrow. But sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do is pause and confront the full truth of our past.” -Senator George Borello.

History was made Monday in Albany. Introduced by State-Native American Relations Subcommittee Chair Joseph Addabbo Jr. and supported on the Senate floor by Senators George Borello and Patrick Gallivan, the New York State Senate unanimously passed Resolution J904, formally acknowledging the atrocities committed at the Thomas Indian School and their lasting impact.
This is a monumental step toward healing and reconciliation.
