On Juneteenth, we’re honoring the past and inspiring the future. The Seneca Nation stands firmly for justice and freedom for all. We want to continue demonstrating to the world that we stand for equality, not just for us but for all our allies and relations.
On Saturday, June 14th, at the regular session of Council, The Seneca Nation designated June 19th as an official Seneca Nation holiday. This commemorates Juneteenth, in honor of the day in 1865 when approximately 250,000 enslaved people in the State of Texas learned of their freedom, two and a half years after U.S. President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Today, we reflect on the struggle and resilience of those who came before us, and recommit to the work of freedom and justice still ahead. For the past few years, proud Seneca community members have marched in solidarity and unity with our friends and family at the Buffalo, N.Y., annual Juneteenth Parade.
