Sovereign Threads presents a groundbreaking fusion of treaty conversations and contemporary Indigenous fashion, weaving together history, strength, and resilience. This piece features the design, concepts, and hand crafting of Dr. Rodney Haring (Seneca carving artist and health research scientist) in collaboration with Tara Haring (Seneca runway model and lawyer), along with Brody D. Jimerson (Seneca weaver, stringer, craftsman) who collectively carved, braided, and weaved treaty annuity cloth with fabric by Indigenous fashion designer B.Yellowtail Rooted in steam bent and hand carved hickory and bear rawhide, Sovereign Threads, embodies the supreme law of the land—honoring Nation-to-Nation treaties as recognized in the U.S. Constitution while asserting sovereignty, governance, and intergenerational continuity. Through striking visual intertwines, this creation redefines Indigenous artistic sovereignty, merging past wisdom with modern expression. The interplay of carving, textile, and design invites dialogue on collective strength, peace, and the enduring power of treaties—not as the past, but as living agreements. Sovereign Threads is a testament to Indigenous innovation, where fashion becomes a medium of resistance, respect, and reimagined futures.
