Birch Bark Canoe Making with Buffalo Maritime Center

Repost from the Seneca-Iroquois International Museum FB

On Wednesday, September 3rd and Thursday, September 11th, the Onöhsagwë:de’ Cultural Center sponsored a van to visit the Buffalo Maritime Center. Museum employees, as well as Men’s Ceremonial & the Allegany Language Department, visited the museum and learned how to build a Birch Bark Canoe.

Instructors, Eddie & Jonathan, gave us insight on how they had begun building the canoe. Using cedar, black & white spruce roots, and birch bark, participants learned how to sheath cedar planks and split roots for lashing. We also want to extend a huge nya:wëh to Eddie, Chelsea and Jonathan for bringing such opportunities to the museum.

We look forward to continuing to work on the canoe and bringing other collaborative possibilities to the community!
