The Rez Kids Closet, Clothing and Gear for Every Season

By Norah Stevens, SNI Newsletter Reporter – Cattaraugus Territory

The initiative was started by the Stevens’ SistersLauren Huff, Erika Stevens, and Stephanie Stafford of the Cattaraugus Territory.

The sisters began a call out for overflow of previously loved items and family, friends, along with community members to go through their closets and part with gently used clothing. This along with an added inventory of items that had been formerly collected by Stephanie to put towards a warm clothing drive. With all the donations the sisters set off to start laundering, sorting and separating their haul. Bringing new life to these once loved donations for the children and families living on the Seneca Nation’s two main territories; the Allegany and Cattaraugus reservations. Lauren came up with the name “Rez Kids Closet,” she felt it fit their initiative. Beginning September 2023 with their first pop up.

The ladies feel it is important knowing our Rez Kids feel seen, supported and have some gear to feel prepared for each season and any special ocassions that may come up. With each of the sisters having their own families they know how expensive and hard it can be in today’s world, so they wanted to give back. The pop up is completely free for kids and families in need. The comunity is welcome to check it out. The Stevens sisters want the community to feel taken care of. Rez Kids Closet has expanded since its first pop up. New items such as sports equipment, sporting jerseys (Bills, Bandits, and other sports teams) baby needs, shoes and boots, traditional clothing (ribbon shirts, ribbon skirts, dresses, handmade jewelry, moccasins) and Indigenous brands are now available. They do not want any child to go without but also have a positive experience owning their first jersey or ribbon shirt.

Typically, the pop up takes place twice a year. Once in the spring/summer and then again in the fall/winter. They are improving with each pop up. The location has changed from the Stanley Huff Heritage Center to the Cattaraugus Community Center, and the Saylor Building. Wherever they can find a space they will set up. The sisters have a vision for the future that Rez Kids Closet can have a permanent location where it can be utilized year-round. They would like the community to know that it is ok to need help.

If you are looking to get involved the program always needs extra hands to help sort, organize or assist the children when browsing. They are currently in need of the following: winter coats, hats, mittens, storage bins, clothing racks, hampers/baskets and tote bags. Clothing donation requirements are that it is laundered, and nothing less than gently used conditioned items. Please refrain from donating things that are torn, tattered or severely stained. Feel free to reach out with any questions. They truly appreciate the community for their generous donations.

Nya:wëh Steph, Lauren and Erika for all your hard work and dedication to our communities!
