The Seneca Nation is continuing the process of updating the 2018 Tribal Hazard Mitigation Plan (THMP). The plan focuses on existing and future buildings, infrastructure, and critical facilities that might be impacted by selected natural and human-caused disasters. Ultimately, the mitigation projects identified and implemented will reduce vulnerability and enable communities to become more resilient to disasters.

To date, the Nation has completed a risk assessment to identify hazards that may impact its Territories, profiled the relevant hazards and their potential consequences, identified assets that are subject to losses or damage, estimated the potential losses that could result from each type of hazard, and developed hazard mitigation strategies. A public meeting was held on November 12th to review the sections of the draft Seneca Nation of Indians Tribal Hazard Mitigation Plan:
The update of this plan allows the Nation to continue to be eligible for future pre-disaster mitigation funding from FEMA. Grant-eligible projects should focus on reduction of risk or impacts to Nation facilities, residential areas and infrastructure. Mitigation looks to improve our resiliency to natural or man-made emergency situations.
Following this meeting the Public Review Period will commence for two weeks. The public and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in this public review period by submitting any comments through this survey (https://forms.office.com/r/qNKU05L50p).
The draft plan is available on the plan’s StoryMap (https://arcg.is/189fWu1).
