Salamanca City Central School District High school art teacher, Mrs. Lori MacArthur and Indigenous Studies Teacher, Mrs. Andrea Cooke united their classes this year to work together to share their basket making skills with the students.
Indigenous Studies students made a berry picking quart size basket, while the Native American Crafts class selected any basket of their choice from a wide variety of pictures of many baskets collected and shared with us by Seneca Elder Sandy Dowdy. Each year students in Mrs. MacArthur’s class will have the opportunity to make a basket of their choice. Next year we hope to broaden our choices by visiting the black ash basket archives at the Onöhsogwë:de’ Museum here on the Ohi:yo’ Territory.
