S.E.A.R.C.H. 2021 Summer Program: Grades 6-7

Submitted by Kellie Maybee, Cattaraugus Education Department

Wow! Another great summer program has come to an end. After such a crazy year with so much uncertainty this was one of the best summers ever! Having a small group of students allowed for genuine connections and instruction. The students’ day consisted of activities involving ELA and math, crafts, outdoor time, swimming, cultural history, Seneca language, and health and wellness. We took several trips to the Seneca Nation Library so the students could engage in quiet reading throughout the day. As a group we read the book ‘Sweetgrass Basket’ by Marlene Carvell and discussed the history of boarding schools including the Thomas Indian School. The students were able to take a trip to Gakwi:yo:h Farms and learn how to braid sweetgrass, which was a main element in the novel.

Sam Jacobs graciously spent three days with us sharing her beading skills and the students were able to bead a pop socket for their cell phones. Sam Agnew from Conservation provided three great activities: catching crayfish, fishing, and a presentation on the life of deer. The students really enjoyed their time outside with Mr. Agnew as he provided hands on conservation knowledge. BHU also supplied a weekly presentation on mental health.

The highlight of every day was an epic Four Square showdown between students and teachers. While no one was seriously injured, a few Crocs were thrown!

A special Nya:wëh to our awesome students this summer, who made it so amazing! We hope you have an excellent school year!
